The AW-101 Merlin is a medium-heavy multi-role helicopter developed by Agusta Westland (now Leonardo) in collaboration with Westland Helicopters. It was set and developed, on the recommendation of both the British Royal Navy and the Italian Navy, to replace the now obsolete SH-3D "Sea King". Entered service in the early 2000s in addition to the main role of an anti-submarine helicopter, thanks to its operational flexibility, it is also ideal, in its various configurations, to carry out missions of transport troops, rescue at sea but also of "combat S.A.R.". It can operate in extreme weather conditions and in any operating environment. Thanks to its three turbines the "Merlin" reaches a maximum speed of 310 km/h and has an operating range of over 1350 km.
